Web of Trust (WOT), a community-powered safe-surfing technology that helps web users find reliable websites, announced today that it has reached the 40 million download milestone on Monday of this week. The milestone was reached in part thanks to a newly announced deal with Russia’s biggest Internet company, Mail.Ru Group, which earlier this month integrated WOT’s crowd-sourced reputation ratings into its new browser.
WOT is a free browser add-on which was conceived by two students from Tampere University of Technology in Finland. Downloads reached the one million milestone in August 2008, then 10 million in March 2010, accelerating to 20 million in 2011, and 30 million by January of 2012. The 40 millionth download was reached just seven months later.
“WOT relies on its users, who rate millions of sites based on their personal experience,” said Markus Suomi, CEO, Web of Trust. “The more users we have, the more effective and valuable the service is for the entire community. That’s why growing the community is very important to us.”
The WOT tool helps Internet users find reliable websites by displaying traffic lights that show the trustworthiness of a site next to every URL link. The traffic light icons are based on ratings from millions of users and trusted technical sources. Web users can start using WOT by downloading the free WOT add-on to their browsers (available for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera).
WOT’s reputation scores protect users around the world from exactly the things that traditional anti-virus software cannot: such as sites with qudownloading the free WOT add-on estionable content, dubious online stores, unreliable vendors, and potential threats to child safely and privacy. The scores also help guide users toward reliable websites. Companies that currently license WOT’s reputation data include Facebook, GlobalSign, DuckDuckGo and many other global online properties.
