Is escapistmagazine.com Safe?

escapistmagazine.com is a good site and offers good articles and video content (most people probably go and see Yahtzees content). There are other things too, which make escapistmagazine.com a good site. However, it's not perfect. As we know, there is no lock icon, meaning that the site is not the best for security reasons. There are very suspicious ads (no pop-ups though) showing that I could win a smart phone (It should be mentioned that it's possibly just Google's fault) and Escapist has Taboola sponsored ads, which usually aren't safe and can lead to harmful sites. It has a bad reputation according to some people on WOT. I highly recommend using Adblock and Privacy Badger when visiting this site (or just ignore the ads, but you should disable trackers). MY SUBJECTIVE OPINION: Never support sites that has Taboola sponsored content. Use Adblock or contact them and explain why you think it's not good. If you are interested watching Zero Punctuation and Judging by the Cover, just check them out on Youtube.

Good entertainment content, but... The mods seem to often ban based on their own politics and personal opinions. This isn't even close to acceptable. They also seem to ban too often. There shouldn't be a 30-80% ban rate on every thread. This is a sign that the mods are trigger happy idiots. For the above reasons, I've labelled it "Good site" and "suspicious". Watch the videos; avoid the discussion.

I received two phishing emails through the single-use e-mail address I supplied to register with The Escapist; no other website was given this address. The phisher has tried twice to obtain the details to my World of Warcraft account. I don't even play that game, so I can only conclude that The Escapist has given away my details, either accidentally, or on purpose. Read into it whatever you like. Additionally, as of 2014-08-20, Ghostery found 16 trackers on this site with its default configuration. I suggest Noscript, Adblock and Ghostery.

A great website for reviews of games, movies and boast a well-functioning community and an overall nice environment. Also home of the review web show "Zero Punctuation". Not really suitable for young children due to some of the material on the website (swearing). Overall a good entertainment website.
