Web of Trust Becomes First Crowd-Sourced Security Solution Invited into Facebook’s AV Marketplace

Web of Trust (WOT), a community-powered safe-surfing tool that helps web users find reliable websites, announced today that Facebook has invited WOT into the AV Marketplace , making WOT available as a free browser add-on for all Facebook users.

Accessible from Facebook’s Security Page , the AV Marketplace offers over one billion Facebook users with free downloads from any of its security partners. WOT’s offering is a browser add-on that protects from threats that only real humans can spot, to complement and fortify whatever antivirus protection users might already have.

“Since May 2011, WOT has been helping Facebook users stay safe by alerting them when they click suspicious external links on Facebook. Now Facebook users can install WOT to stay safe outside of Facebook too, and also help others surf safer by rating websites they visit,” said Markus Suomi, CEO of Web of Trust. “We are very pleased that WOT has been added to Facebook’s AV Marketplace and we welcome all Facebook users to install the add-on and join our global Web of Trust.”

WOT’s reputation scores protect users around the world from exactly the things that traditional anti-virus software cannot such as sites with questionable content, dubious online stores, unreliable vendors, and potential threats to child safely and privacy. The scores also help guide users toward reliable websites.

“We have been proud partners with Web of Trust for the past year and a half, and are excited to announce a new stage of that partnership to keep our users and their data safe. Not only will Facebook users continue to benefit from WOT's reputation warnings when clicking potentially malicious links but also will be able to download their browser add-on for protection no matter where they are on the web” said Joe Sullivan, CSO of Facebook.

The WOT tool helps Internet users find reliable websites by displaying traffic lights that show the trustworthiness of a site next to every URL link. The traffic light icons are based on ratings from millions of users and trusted technical sources. Web users can start using WOT by downloading the free WOT add-on to their browsers (available for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera). Recently WOT celebrated 50 million downloads of the free WOT browser add-on.
