Web of Trust Passes 50 Million Downloads Milestone

Web of Trust (WOT), a community-powered safe-surfing tool that helps web users find reliable websites, announced today that it has passed the 50 million downloads milestone.

“Our downloads have nearly doubled just this year,” said Sami Tolvanen, co-founder of WOT. “What that means is there are millions more people rating their website experiences and warning others about phishing scams, phony online stores, and other modern day threats that we find on the Internet. It’s a beautiful example of people banding together and taking action to help secure the Internet we all use every day.”

WOT is a free browser add-on (available for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera) that crowd-sources ratings from actual users to show you which websites you can trust, based on millions of users’ experiences around the world, so that you can stay safe when you search, surf and shop online. The WOT community generates approximately 300,000 new ratings each week and posts an average of 2.5 million cautions per day.

In addition to private individuals using WOT to find reliable websites, large companies also license reputation data from WOT in order to protect their customers. Corporate licensees of WOT data include Facebook, Mail.Ru, DuckDuckGo and many other global online properties.
